Read essays, articles or books on creativity and more than once reads is you can to increase your creativity and new ideas by reading not create magazines that would usually read. The proposal is, go to your local newspaper and pick up magazines, would you ever read and learn for ideas, connections and trends.
This is an oft-repeated example for use outside stimulus as a way to jumpstart of our creativity.
I have read many times this proposal. I have suggested it to me. I have done it even a few times. But I never somebody someone show an example to do it.
Until now.
Earlier this week I found the April issue of Wired magazine in my briefcase when I traveled. I had before it a few weeks in an airport chosen because I was drawn on the cover, which suggested that the focus of the issue "the new world of games."
While I no subscriber Wired magazine (formerly) and you may not that either, I think you will find both the process and my results insightful and fun.
My process read A magazine for creative insights is pretty simple. Receive a magazine, a highlighter, and maybe some paper or your journal. Then start reading. Not fly over or read only the things that immediately or of course are of interest to you. Read everything. Read articles and view. And while you read are questions things like...
What remind me about?
How does this on my situation, the problem or challenge?
What did you do that I can do?
How could I use this?
How can I experience or suggestions in the article (or ad) learn?
These are certainly not the only questions can make but are enough getting to you. In this creative journey with a very specific challenge or problem in mind, or you can just do see it what serendipitous in each case is ideas generate - OK!
In this case, my trip was a random – I wasn't thinking about a particular issue or a challenge I read just to see what I could find.
How: read the rest of this article the rest of this article offer some of my ideas and what inspired. I encourage you to read on my process to watch and see what ideas or insight you get from my findings. In other words, I encourage you to use the process I described on the rest of this article!
You can also decide to go to the library and Wired magazine to the April 2006 everyone can see what I'm describing.
My journey... page 26 - a side bar the question, "is a half hour show too long for today's viewers?" Three people with different perspectives to answer. My first reaction is that this an interesting question.... And my second was that the answers in fact the quality of the story come. If a good story, people will watch (hey, we sat up 3 + hours for Titanic!) So, while this is an interesting question, it is a bit backwards. Is the relevant questions, how well the story? This refers to my work on education - how long do to meet the people at a meeting, etc. Do I think that times are changing? Sure I can. But people are still people. Will make is less over time, you are engaged. In the end - either by history or great interaction in a learning situation, the question is not correct as we humans, how long is the experience can engage.
… Page 29 - Lexus presents a four page advertisement for a PBS series with Charlie Rose. It contains very interesting excerpts from two shows in the series. This content was so convincing almost the price of the magazine itself - far better than many articles have read value I in the past. It reminds me that advertising can be relevant and that if we educate and inform others, in a valuable way we a better job of marketing could do to persuade or sell than convince by its attempts to market or sell.
… Page 56 - talks about a feature film based on a Beastie Boys concert. This movie was created recorded footage of 50 fans cameras the band for the length of the concert, your entire experience films gave you. Over 100 hours of raw material, amateur worked together for this film. Although I Don ' t of a Beastie Boys own album and your have their concerts on one I caught completely by this idea! Like me, and it because the band got this idea (the collection of footage) implemented in 3 days - from conception to footage. 3 Days. This has my thoughts how long it takes me challenging is ready to implement something... or were quick to implement. It also the power is always your customers experience your product or service involved. These two thirds of a page had me much in the last few days thinking.
… Page 66 section shows play of magazine images and short descriptions of new products. One side is called the storm tracker (this is an umbrella with a light bulb at the end of the handle, which collects forecast local forecasts (wireless) and tells you if you have to carry it, based on how much it flashes.) The more it flashes (up to 100 times per minute) more rain. While I was many people who see payment of $ 99 for this, I "not computer" fascinated by taking a small device to give us data, we may be able to use. While I products like this design, I'm fascinated by how these types of technologies may aid, impact or performance and learn influence in the future. The storm tracker gave me the eyes for watch and think opened on this issue.
These examples get even me share by less that half of the magazine, and I have all my findings from the first 66 pages!
Rather than in this article, I encourage you to read more on my blog, how these snippets are exchanging is.
I hope that riding was interesting along on my trip and I hope you have a look or two through my examples above. More than that though, I hope that I collect a magazine which never convinced before have read, and try to handle this for themselves. If you do I promise you will learn something and an annoying problem or identify an amazing opportunity along the way.
